A film by Juliana Antunes
Baronesa, Juliana Antunes, Brazil, 2017, 71' DCP OV with Spanish subtitles
Vila Mariquinha is a favela in the northern area of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. This is where Andreia and Leid live, main characters of this film that plays within the limits of fiction-documentary. Juliana Antunes, the director settled there for six years in order to prepare this feature starring non-actresses. Baronesa is attached to the land and the dignity of the characters it portrays, totally away from common places and topics of miserabilism. It is about showing the luminous and raw life of the women of the favela: their leisure, their pleasure, their power.
