Finissage programme of the exhibition

"More than a voice"

Ujjayi, Itziar Okariz (2018)

Ujjayi, Itziar Okariz (2018)

This programme is tied to the exhibition by the artist Itziar Okariz titled I Never Said Umbrella and to the biennial project  Ariketak: la segunda respiración, inviting us to reflect on the voice as an exercise which invokes the mechanics of a specific body, beyond the foundation it provides for words.

Meaning—that which we consider intelligible—is always the result of an exercise in which a great variety of voices are linked together. All meaning is the result of diversity and of an exchange of positions between the pronouns ‘you’ and ‘I’. This diversity not only draws on the existence and use of multiple languages, but also on ways of diversifying the registers we use: “we talk in a colloquial or learned way, we exclaim or we discuss, we whisper or we speechify, we opt for song or for gesture, we remain silent in different ways...”

The programme opens on June 1st with a round table involving the exhibition curator Beatriz Herráez, the artist Itziar Okariz and Lola Hinojosa, manager of the Performing Arts and Medium Collection at the Reina Sofía Museum. The participants will discuss the use of voice in performance as an artistic practice which has pierced pioneering art forms, including the paths, connections and forces which have taken us to where we are today.

Following the round table, Beatrice Dillon will revisit her piece Can I Change My Mind?, which invites the public to enter from head to toe into a minimalist syntax experience where musical language is brought down to its most minimalistic structure, generating concatenations of rhythms and signs which seem to have no end. The piece gets us thinking about change and its forms of (re)production.

The following day, on June 2nd, Carmen Pardo will give a talk titled Los cuerpos de la voz (The bodies of the voice), drawing on what voice invokes in the first place and a form of idealism which has set the body aside. Itziar Okariz will then perform the work Ujjayi in the exhibition hall.

More than a voice will end with the performance of two theatre plays by artist Guy de Cointet (Paris 1934- Los Angeles 1983), introduced by Hugues Decointet, director of the “Guy de Cointet Society”. His research and play with language, the use of humour and his capacity to transit between different media have made Guy de Cointet a reference for different generations of artists. He is also a crucial figure to approach the links and exchanges that are established between theatre, performance and contemporary art since the 1960s. Tabakalera is exhibiting two historic pieces by this artist: My Father's diary (1975), featuring Sarah Vermandes, and Going to the Market (1975), featuring Mary Ann Duganne.
