O som ao redor, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Brazil, 2012, 131’
High fences, barking guard dogs, an empty street – the view of a typical middle-class residential area in Recife. It’s nighttime and the charismatic João has just made love to his latest acquaintance Sofia. Next morning, he discovers her window has been smashed and her car stereo stolen. This is just one of many incidents that continues to trouble João and his neighbours. When a private security company offers to protect the area from criminal elements, life for the residents of this gated community takes an unexpected turn. Designed like a carefully constructed puzzle, this multi-award winning feature film debut by Kleber Mendonça Filho is a powerful ensemble film nestled somewhere between thriller and poem.
