Tabakalera will open its doors after four years of works, reconverted into an international center for contemporary culture. To celebrate it, we have organised a series of special activities with artists, performances, music, exhibitions, visits, workshops and projections.

We are happy that we will be accompanied by a number of artists, such as Idoia Zabaleta and Nilo Gallego, together with Chus Domínguez, with their Orquestina de Pigmeos, Anna Manubens and Soledad Gutiérrez curators of the exhibition, Pablo Marte and Marion Cruza presenting the project they have developed with the workers of the former tobacco factory; Alex Mendizabal and Pierre Berthet with their sound installations; Cristina Lucas and Quim Pujol; Dora García and Roger Bernat; Manu Uranga and Isidora Valcárcel Medina; Nadia Barkarte, Anaïs Tuerlickx, Las Raras, Lyncoln Diniz and Rosa Casado with Mike Brookes.

We will also have a series of workshops and cinema for families, together with Muelle 3, Maushaus and Marc Vives, videogames, mending workshops, liv e coding sessions and How to make for makers in Hirikilabs. And if you want to be a dj for a day, this is your chance.

And this is only the beginning. We will be waiting for you.

    11-09-2015 - 19:00-21:30

We have never opened before and now we are doing so.  We have never done so for a building before and now we are doing so. Its pillars, its slabs, its walls, its beams, its load-bearing walls, its floors, its workmanship, its orientation… We think that every single detail can be conjugated forwards and backwards: I open you, you open me, it opens us, we open you, you open them, they are opened.

The visit to the different parts of the building proposed by the Albornoces blancos group consists of a series of exercises for six bodies that lie on the floor when they say ‘floor’ and who welcome when they say ‘welcome’.   It is an offering of Idoia Zabaleta along with Loida Gómez, Angela Millano, Idurre Azkue, Xabi Manubens and Natxo Montero.

Looking outside the box to see the future. Interpreting the cues, listening, sounding out by paying attention to the small changes that will let us decipher the future.  Moving in space and time, shifting the focus to listen to the Egia district, the Blas de Otero square, the newsagent’s opposite, the train station, the river estuary, and, further away, the Bay of Biscay.

Orquestina de Pigmeos will be made up of Nilo Gallego and Chus Dominguez, along with local artists and groups on this occasion.

    11-09-2015 - 19:00-21:30

We approach our intervention at Tabakalera as a means of questioning our own practice. As an experiment: Can the highly ritualised performance that cultural institutions incite in bodies be interrupted and the political and artistic power that lies in the action of reclaiming ourselves be recovered, while the gestures are given new meaning?

    11-09-2015 - 19:00-21:30

… bolts of lightning flashing from left to right when looking south were good omens. The soothsayers of the time of Romulus predicted future events by listening to the cries of ravens, rooks and owls, by watching eagles, vultures and hawks in flight, and by the attitudes and positions of reptiles and mammals. Sacred chickens being hungry were a good omen...

We are inviting visitors to join us in the rite of welcoming a new space in the city during the opening of the Tabakalera building.  We suggest you make your way through the building by any means possible, for example, with your left hand held out in greeting and your right one behind the ear as if listening, which will augur well for whatever the future holds.
